COLUMBUS (October 9, 2007) – Keeping the state’s more
than two million older Ohioans active and moving, the Ohio Department
of Transportation (ODOT) is distributing $7 million to reimburse local
public transit systems that offer reduced fares to the elderly and
people with disabilities.
Across the state this year, ODOT will assist 53 local transit
systems under the Ohio Elderly and Disabled Transit Fare Assistance
Program.
Highlights from the list include:
- Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) will
receive $2,246,309
- Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) in Columbus will receive
$791,531
- Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority (SORTA) in Cincinnati
will receive $482,403
- Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority (TARTA) will receive
$141,360
To qualify, the public transit systems must provide a reduced fare
- up to half the base fare price - to elderly riders and people with
disabilities. Under the program’s preset funding formula, ODOT uses
state funds to offset the reduced amount.
Through more than a dozen transit-related efforts, ODOT’s Office of
Transit advocates continued personal mobility for all Ohioans, by
supporting, coordinating and funding public transportation as a
critical element of Ohio’s multi-modal transportation system.
